As I read through my Bible this year, I've been doing a side study of the person of God. The following is more of what I've learned or been reminded of.NAMES OF GOD
~ Jehovah-Rohi (The LORD my Shepherd)
"The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want." ~Psalm 23:1 (NIV)
HIS NAME-HIS CHARACTER
"The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." ~Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)
In Old Testament times, someone's name held close ties to their character. That is why many times a name was changed, as in the case of Abraham and Sarah. So this verse holds extra meaning. Not only is His name a strong tower--HE is a strong tower, a place of refuge and safety.
A FLAWLESS SHIELD
"Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him." ~Proverbs 30:5 (NIV)
The term "flawless" literally means "refined," or in other words, tested by heat and found to be without dross. I've come to realize that you can learn who a person is by their words. It is no different with God; His word and His person are flawless.
A shield was used to cover the body of a soldier, especially used to protect their vital organs. Wow! What an idea--that God shields me and protects the most vital parts of who He made me to be. Awesome!
WHO HE IS FOR US
"Yet I am always with You; You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with Your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever....But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all Your deeds." ~Psalm 73:23-26, 28 (NIV)
What a list!
- always with us
- holds our hand
- guides us with wise counsel
- all we can desire
- the strength of our heart
- our portion
- good to be near
- Sovereign LORD
- refuge
"Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty. He wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of His upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds His chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes the winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants....How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom You made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures." ~Psalm 104:1-4, 24 (NIV)
Not only did He create it all, He sustains it all. He is very great, and wears splendor and majesty and light like we wear a jacket or a pair of jeans. He rides on the wings of wind. He is above all!
Father God, we praise You for who You are--for being our Shepherd, our safety, our security, our shield. Thank You for the countless benefits of being Your children. You alone are worthy of worship and praise! In Jesus' Name, Amen.
